Exhibition Hours
March 1-31. Woodlawn is open from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. daily including weekends. For adequate time to view all entries, please arrive before 3:30 p.m.

Daily Admission Fees
$9.00 Adults
$4.50 Children (ages K-12)
Children 5 and under are free and all exhibitors receive one complimentary pass.
Friends of Woodlawn are admitted at no charge.

Dine in the Underwood Room
During the exhibition, lunch is prepared and served by "Nelly's Needlers," Woodlawn's volunteer stitching group. The menu, which includes homemade quiche, chicken salad, and delicious chocolate cake and lemon tarts, is served from 11:30 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. All proceeds, including gratuities, support Woodlawn.

Museum Shop

Members of Nelly's Needlers create hand-crafted works as part of the vast array of items available for purchase. Books and Virginia foods are also featured. All proceeds support educational programs at Woodlawn.

2005 Award Winners (Just Announced!!!!)

Artists from seven states and three countries have been awarded special distinction as part of the 42nd Annual Needlework Exhibition. Winner of the Eleanor Lewis Award (Best in Show) is Leslie Carson of Annapolis, MD for her Japanese Embroidery. Other major winners are Kenneth Toon, Wichita, KS, Pope-Leighey Award (Best Miniature); Lisa A. Ashton, Ashton, MD, Frank Lloyd Wright Award (Best Original Design); and Alice Stauffer, Baltimore, MD, Golden Age (70+).

Judge's Choice Award winners are Shouri Whitehead, Oak Hill, VA; John Kazmaier, Owings, MD; and Ray Dockstader, Washington, D.C. Karen Clark and Guy Palazzolo, both of Alexandria, claimed Director's Awards. Kyle J. Davis, MD, earned the Emma Matheson Award (Best Junior Entry) and Robert Reynolds, Alexandria, Va, received the Kay Durkin Award (Best Entry from Children's Workshop.) The children and parents of Nyanni Primary School in Wamunyu, Kenya, Africa are named with special participation honors for their depictions of their native land.

Other Second and Third Place prizes, as well as Honorable Mentions have been awarded in original, adaptation, and commercial entries in Beadwork, Blackwork,Canvas work, Counted Thread, Crewel, Cross Stitch, Embroidery, Fine Hand Sewing, Hardanger, and Smocking. Over 700 pieces of work created with a hand held needle were judged. All entries are displayed inside the historic mansion, which celebrates its 200th anniversary this year.

Demonstrations of various needlework techniques by local teachers, shop owners and needle artists will take place throughout the month.
